Early History

The first semi-automatic rifle design was produced in 1885 by Ferdinand Ritter von Mannlicher. Later on, this self-loading design was also incorporated into shotguns and pistols. John Moses Browning, the famous American gunsmith, designed the first successful semi-automatic shotgun, called the Browning Auto-5. Browning’s shotgun was first manufactured in 1902 by Fabrique Nationale de Herstal, but it was sold in America under the Browning brand. The Auto-5’s long recoil operation became the dominant form in semi-automatic shotguns for the following five decades. Browning’s gun was discontinued in 1999.

In the early 20th century, Winchester introduced two new models which operated on the principle of blowback in order to function semi-automatically. These were the Model 1903, and Model 1905. Model 1903 was eventually replaced by the Winchester Model 63 in 1932.

Semi-automatic rifles were not largely used during World War I or World War II, except by the Americans, who made the M1 Garand (a .30 caliber semi-automatic rifle) their standard infantry weapon in the late 1930s.

Types of Semi-Automatic Guns

Semi-automatic guns come in the form of pistols, rifles, and shotguns, which can be designed to be semi-automatic only or are capable of being both full automatic and semi-automatic, depending on the selected mode. Semi-automatics use the force of recoil or gas to eject empty cases and load fresh cartridges for the next shot, allowing repeat shots by simply pulling the trigger. A double action revolver also fires with just a trigger pull, but it is not considered semi-automatic.

Owning semi-automatic guns is like owning a piece of history. From the 19th century until today, these guns have won wars and brought innovation to the industry. Contact us for everything related to your firearms and ammunition needs.
