Origin of the Term “Gun”

The English word gun is said to originate from the name given in the 14thcentury to a particular firearm, called ‘Domina Gunilda’ (Latin for ‘Lady Gunilda’). This was a large ballista, an enormous mechanical bolt throwing weapon, which was mounted at the Windsor castle. The name might have derived from Gunnhildr, an Old Norse women’s name composed of the words hildr and gunn, both of which mean ‘war’. The terms gonne and gunne started being applied to firearms in general by the late 14th and early 15th centuries.

The first successful rapid-fire gun was invented by Richard Gatling and called the Gatling Gun. It was used during the American Civil War in the 1860s. World War I saw the introduction of the first sub-machine gun, a fully automatic gun that fires pistol cartridges, called the MP18.1. It was invented in 1918 by the German army, and it became the main firearm used by the Strosstruppen, assault groups specialized in trench combat.

It wasn’t until the Second World War that the first assault rifle was introduced. It was named StG44 and was also invented by the Germans. The StG44 was the bridge between machine guns, long-range rifles, and short-range sub-machine guns.
