Kydex Holsters in Detroit, Michigan
Kydex refers to a type of thermoplactic acrylic polyvinyl chloride materials. This line of materials is manufactured by Sekisui SPI. Kydex is used for aircraft bulkheads, firearm holsters, sheaths, and for knives.
What Kydex Is and How It Was Invented
The material was originally created in 1965 by Rohm and Haas, and it was designed for use in aircraft interiors. Kydex, LLC, previously known as Kleerdex Company, LLC, purchased the product line in 1987 and is now producing the material in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania under the brand name Sekisui SPI.
The material is an acrylic-polyvinyl chloride composite, combining the rigidity and formability of the acrylic, and the chemical resistance, toughness, and good interior finish of the polyvinyl chloride.
The Kydex sheet can be thermoformed, post formed, brake formed, and laminated, and its thickness can vary from .028 to .500 inches.
Because of its properties, this material is used to manufacture many different products, such as knife sheaths, firearm holsters, springs and tensioners, seat backs, aircraft pull-down trays, truck fenders, and more.
